Game Development

While VRTRON dabbles in different digital solutions for businesses, game development is the home where our heart rests content.

Whether we are working on our own IP titles or commissioning a title on order, our approach is a no-holds-barred one that values detail and immaculate quality while keeping deadlines in sight.

When taking on third-party projects, along every step of the way, we work with you – the client – to realise the game of your dreams; from conceptualisation to post-release, we take an active stance and keep you in the loop, also meaning that we offer support after the game hits the market.

End-to-end planning and construction

We scour the market for the best niches to build games in from the ground up. We develop across platforms for smart devices, PCs, VR/AR/MR, and even consoles. That said, being the picky bunch that we are, we only go for projects that are well-suited to our tastes and skill sets.

The result is always fun, beautifully crafted, and immersive games for different tastes and age groups. That’s because quality is at the heart of our creative process and we strive to dress our games with sharp visuals and sounds, and with catchy game mechanics that turn players’ gaming into memorable experiences.

VRTRON is a trendsetter and industry icon on The Maltese Islands, and our history and portfolio packed with projects proves this. But we never sit on our laurels; we give every new task the attention it deserves as every new one brings with it a new learning curve. And since we love doing what we do, that’s all the drive we need to take up each new challenge.

Mobile Games

When smartphones hit the market, they shook up not only different digital industries, but also our perception and lifestyles. In hindsight, no wonder mobile gaming quickly spread like wildfire. Besides reeling in several new casual players, it captured a notably large portion of the game dev market – especially that indie – by creating several new opportunities for indie developers to bud.

VRTRON was quick to act on this new platform trend, and immediately channeled a lot of its resources into 2D and 3D game development for both iOS and Android. Having had already mastered Unity, our programmers wasted no time in turning this into their go-to tool of the trade for smart devices. We quickly learned to scale game assets according to budget and time constraints, while making sure that any of our titles that leave the woodshed only deliver peak performance.

Our research for mobile gaming doesn’t limit itself to just the development; we also look at all the strategies needed to reach out to the biggest number of players possible.

Web / Facebook Game Development

After Facebook climbed to the top, consolidating its position as one of the ruling social media platforms, it eventually set its sight on gaming. By implementing its own Instant Games Platform, it established a new demographic of players looking for a more casual approach to gaming as well as more social interaction with fellow Facebook users. This new gaming corner, so to speak, has no steep learning curve unlike in the case of hardcore RPGs for instance. Players can just jump in at any point for a quick fix and jump right back out.

We turned the tide in our favour when we adopted HTML5 as one of our coding tool of preference for such games. This open-source, lightweight tool, along with Unity, empowered us to create better cross-platform games and gamified content, also optimised for Facebook.

VRTRON takes advantage of the relative ease and cost-effectiveness of development for Facebook. Beyond that, we look closely at the platform’s integrated marketing tools and huge customer base reach in order to turn it into a lucrative source of revenue. Of course,we can then potentially adapt our games across different platforms, namely, smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Virtual Reality Game Development

Attempts to bring virtual reality to life have been made over the past few decades, but it’s only now that we’re starting to experience truly immersive VR gaming. High-end tech headsets such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Playstation VR on one hand and more affordable versions such as Gear VR and Google Cardboard are hosting several new VR titles.

This is why VRTRON has been quick to leap at this opportunity and take on tasks to find solutions to better design games that capitalise on VR tech’s unique features and improve user experience. We build VR games from the ground up as well as port ready-made games to VR, and we were one of the first indie developers to do so. Before Google Maps took off, the core team that would eventually become VRTRON crafted a VR predecessor for PC. Subsequently, in 2011, the same core team released a game Space CommandAR, which, along with the AR toy gun it was made for, was awarded for best design and innovation at the New York Toy Fair.

We take VR immersion and interactivity to new heights. And since VR is being pushed in gaming as well as in other areas, one of the niches that makes good use of this technology we’ve penetrated is Edutainment.

Augmented and Mixed Reality

From the wildly successful Pokémon Go on mobile devices to the innovative AR/MR goggles Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap, gaming is being taken even a step further than VR thanks to Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). Said technology meshes together our physical reality with virtual environments, props, and characters to interact in a direct way with the lot.

While admittedly, AR/MR technology is still at an early stage, many industry experts are already placing their stakes on it as the technology of the future for gaming and beyond. And this is why VRTRON is not letting this one simmer any longer. Our team is already hard at work with this technology to bring education about sustainable energy and gaming together in one fun package with our upcoming title Energenies. Rest assured those Energenies are one real adorable bunch!

Some of the Game genres we work with are:
